Welcome to my blog, my name is Mary-Elizabeth and I’m an aspiring photographer.
This blog will mainly be focused on my photography and my opinions surrounding it. I’m a photography student in college and I enjoy shooting professionally and casually. When I do my street and hobbyist photography I mainly stick to film photography. When it comes to my professional photography I mainly stick to digital. I have experience in many fields, boudoir, couples, cosplay, figure study, fashion, editorial, headshots, and fine art.
I started getting into photography around the summer of 2014. I was going to Kenya on a trip to build a school and I figured I should document it well. It was then that I got my first camera, a Nikon D3200. These photos weren’t exactly artistic or well done but they did the job. The following year I joined my school yearbook team and took photos at school during events concerning band, sports, spirit week, etc. After I finished high school I became quite close with a film photography enthusiast. He bought me my first film camera and introduced me to street and art photography. I learnt everything I know about film from him and he is still, to this day one of my biggest inspirations concerning photography. Since then I’ve gotten serious about photography, I went to a summer class and learnt more about digital photography, I’ve enrolled in college as a photography major, and started doing photography professionally.
When it comes to what I want to do with my photography, I’m not completely sure yet, there are so many fields I’m interested in going into. I have one dream of becoming a freelance photographer, taking photos for magazines such as vogue, another man, W, and maybe even rolling stone. I’d love to follow in the footsteps of Annie Leibovitz in this area. Another dream of mine is to be a music photographer, I’d love to go on tour with bands and be their photographer behind the scenes and on stage. I have a lot of interest in going down the journalism path and taking photos for newspapers and magazines at big world changing events, like the woman’s march in DC or the severe need for help in Syrian refugee camps. My more realistic dream is to become a part time wedding and portrait photographer here in Winnipeg.
I’m inspired by many photographers of many different styles. In the fine art spectrum one of my favourites is Patrick Joust, a resident of Baltimore that takes photos around his home at night. The way he takes photos is unreal and beautiful, they give off a feeling of an abandoned neon metropolis, almost ghostly.
My favourite street photographer is Vivian Maier, who, because of her absolute rudeness and sneakiness while taking photos could take perfectly honest photos. They were interesting and thought provoking. My favourite thing about her photography was her ability to take photos that seemed to sum up who the person was even though she didn’t know them at all.
When it comes to fine art portraiture my main inspiration is Annie Leibovitz. She’s photographed everyone who’s anyone and her photos are incredible and breathtaking. Her life is something I envy deeply.
A fashion photographer I adore is Alex Hainer, she’s a young elusive photographer whose photos are interesting and beautiful. She takes photos of ford models.
I take bits and pieces of these photographers’ styles and put them together to make my own style, my photography wouldn’t be the same at all if it weren’t for them.
As for the question, ‘why do I want to be a photographer,’ I have many reasons. Photography seems to be what I’m best at. It’s what I can always make myself proud with, and lots of the time I surprise myself. I’m not very good at talking about my own photography since I’m a fairly modest person, but I believe that I’m quite good. Photography is also the thing I’m most passionate about, nothing else gives me quite as much joy or appreciation of life.
Cheers,
MEV
