on location

Recently, I’ve done a few on location editorial photo shoots, which I find to be something different, exciting, and stressful. Lots of planning goes into one, you have to find models, find a day that works for many people, and then execute your plans and ideas. Nothing quite like an in studio shoot that’s easy and so automatic to me, the lighting is easy to set up, always the same. My two most recent photo shoots that were on location the first was one three-person shoot that went all around downtown and the second a two person shoot in an abandoned hospital right outside of Gimli. Continued is an explanation of both photo shoots.
The first shoot I did with three of my friends - Marissa, Jasmine, and Connor - was quite interesting, we went all over downtown, first stop was the Stella’s bakery in the Buhler center of the university of Winnipeg, we mainly just went there for supper. After that, we went down to The Soap Opera, which is a small Laundromat on the corner of Spence and Sargent. At first the person operating the Laundromat wouldn’t let us take photos but my friend Connor convinced them to let us model for a little. They were worried we were going to take photos of patrons instead of each other, which is kind of a bother. We spent ten minutes inside of the Laundromat taking photos quickly and continued on.
The next stop was the University of Winnipeg there are a few spots there that always interested me when I was a student there. This part was pretty straightforward and fun. We took photos in 3 different parts of the university, a yellow stairway, among some colorful lockers, and in a small area right before some classrooms.
Next, we went to a place called music trader, which got me my favorite photos from the entire shoot. We spent time browsing and enjoying the music library they had there. The plus side of this part of the shoot was that I found ‘don’t shoot me, I’m only the piano player‘ on vinyl. The people working there were very kind and okay with me taking photos there.
The other on location shoot I did was shot right outside of Gimli in an abandoned military hospital. I took along my girlfriend and two of my friends who modeled for me, Shaelynne and Ashton. This day was very very fun because it was like a mini road trip, we woke up early and picked everyone up and went out there, once we got there we found the hospital and just walked around while taking photos. The hospital is one of the most interesting places I’ve ever gone, it’s crazily visually stimulating, the place is filled with stuff. After we finished taking photos we went down to the docks and watched the ice festival, which consisted of some car racing on the ice. (We also got free hot chocolate).
And those were my two latest editorial's.
Cheers,
MEV
