This is a playlist I call Fangirl because I made it for a book of the same name. It’s my favorite book and I feel very deeply about it. All these songs strike a core for me and I think they’re gorgeous. Let me explain them to you.
1. I Was by Florist
This is a very soft song that seems to be about a gender fluid kid who used to be very uncomfortable and confused about their gender. But halfway through they seem to grow up, find comfort in their body and accept it. This is shown in the lyric “and now I’m not afraid I’ve found a body, soul and mind that I can keep and now I’m not afraid.” All in all, this song is lovely, it’s beautiful, it’s about accepting yourself and your dysphoria, the singers charming voice makes the song all the better.

2. Feel it All Around by Washed Out
This is a very interesting song, it’s hazy and smooth, and it surrounds you. Very much like the name of the song. This song is all about the past. Particularly giving nostalgia to those who grew up in the 80’s. There are concealed messages in the music; of old songs, commercial tunes, sound effects from radios, or small things people grew up hearing and rarely noticed. I’ve heard some stuff about the music being made by using sounds from cassettes and that must be the reason why the audio is so wild.

3. No Matter Where We Go by Whitney
This is a lighthearted song; it gives you a laid back feeling of “we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.” A no worries kind of vibe. While listening to it you feel like a teenager in love, ignoring exams and finals, going on a cruise down a dirt road.

4. Outside With The Cuties by Frankie Cosmos
This is such an incredible song I adore the singers voice. I believe this song is a plea for love. The voice of the song talks about watching her best friends in love. She feels ‘far from home’ feels lonely, and I assume because of this she starts to think about the one she loves. The song seems to suggest that the person she loves is the person she writes music with. That’s what so brave about this song, she’s telling the person who looks over her lyrics she’s in love with them.

5. If I Was a Folkstar by The Avalanches
I love this song so much; it’s got a casual feeling to it. It’s a combination of so many different types of sounds, it feels like the 90’s all wrapped up into one song. It feels very ambient and beautiful, kind of overwhelming just because of how many layers of sound there is. But when you get to the end of the verse, it gets turned into a love song. “let’s wake up side by side, let’s stay here till we die, don’t make me close my eyes.” This is a song about being in love, about always wanting to be with the one you love, how you can’t disappear on them.

6. Driving to Hawaii by Summer Salt
This song has a similar feeling to no matter where we go. I imagine kids escaping the life they once knew, living day to day, driving around in a VW bus always having an acoustic guitar around. The singer has an incredible voice, he takes control of the song amidst the instruments that really capture your attention.

7. We’re Not Just Friends by Parks, Squares and Alleys
This song is obviously about unrequited love between a guy and his best friend that looks at him as a brother. They are clearly very close and feel no need to tell each other how much they love each other. Maybe it’s not even unrequited love, maybe it’s an underlying love they don’t talk about at all, something they’re too nervous to talk about because they’re scared to ruin their friendship.

8. Hope by Christian Akridge
Now this is a personal favorite because not only is the song amazing but the boy who wrote it was only 15.Hope is about making a mistake in love, and regretting it later. It’s about a confusing, passionate, short period that wraps up two young people so engrossingly they have tunnel vision.

9. Archie, Marry Me by Alvvays
Archie is a boy that is clearly very unnerved by marriage and the concept of it.His girlfriend however, is very infatuated with it. The two people in this relationship seem to be young, they don’t have much money and they have student loans to worry about. It appears she already has her and Archie’s entire future planned; all the adventures she wants to have.

10. My Kind of Woman by Mac Demarco
This song is clearly about a boy who loves a girl, he clearly sees her as a reflection on him (in a girl, of course) and loves her with all of his will, with everything he has and is very happy of having her by his side even though she is driving him mad. But she doesn’t feel the same as he does, she looks at him as a friend. This song has an incredible vibe to it, as always since it’s mac, the guitar sound is extremely unique and beautiful. This is one of the best songs on the mix.

11. Reconstruction Site by The Weakerthans
The Weakerthans are one of my all-time favorite bands for many reasons, their songs are more like poems and their lyrics make you feel at home. Reconstruction site is a song about a hospitalized man sorting through his emotions, thoughts, shortcomings, and memories. Because of this he decides to ignore his mortality.

12. I Love You So by The Walters
Yet another song about love, this one is about a boy who’s so deeply in love with someone who’s not right for him. They use him as a crutch when their current partner isn’t all they need, or want. He tries so hard to get over this person, and he does everything in his power to get rid of his feelings.

Cheers,
MEV
